What’s in the New Learning Guide
The guide supports students and teachers in exploring the production through Drama and Theatre, Dance and PSHE. You don’t need to work through it in order, so you can pick the sections that suit your students best.
It opens with a synopsis, a character list and a look at the show’s themes, from solidarity, community and masculinity to grief, family and the right to strike. A section on social and historical context explains the 1984-85 miners’ strike and what it meant for pit villages like Easington, where the story is set.
Students can also read interviews with the creative team. Choreographer Peter Darling and associate choreographer Jeroen Luiten talk about casting and training the boys who play Billy, and how numbers such as Solidarity and Angry Dance were created. Set designer Ian MacNeil explains his design process, and casting director Nick Hockaday shares audition tips for young performers. There’s also an interview with Liam Mower, one of the three original boys who played Billy in London’s West End from 2005, who now returns to play Older Billy.
To support learning, the guide includes a curriculum map covering Drama and Theatre, Dance, Performing Arts, English, PSHE and careers. The classroom and studio activities include devising from images and quotations, choreographic tasks, persuasive speech writing, and PSHE discussions on gender roles and expressing emotion. Reduced Accelerator Schools Rates
The Accelerator Schools Rate brings Band D tickets down to £25 per student and Band B and C tickets down to £35 per student. These rates are available for Monday to Wednesday evening performances, so reserve your school trip before the deadline to lock in the reduced pricing.
School trip rates of £29.50 per student are also available for Monday to Thursday evening performances and Wednesday matinees. All rates are for school trip bookings of 10+ students, with one free adult ticket for every 10 students. Rates exclude school holidays and other exclusion dates, and all tickets are subject to availability.
