In Southern Africa, David Livingstone encountered women who were in positions of political power like Chief Manenko.

Throughout Africa, women were spiritual leaders, chiefs and warriors. These were very different from the roles of women in Britain at the time, as the women David encountered often did the same jobs and tasks as men. He wrote about these encounters, describing his thoughts and what he had seen in his writing.

David Livingstone’s Birthplace is a dynamic visitor experience where people can learn about and be inspired by Livingstone’s story, his childhood home and their collection.

Today they continue Livingstone’s mission by enabling people from Scotland, Sub-Saharan Africa and beyond to engage in intercultural dialogue and participate in the world as active global citizens.
