An interactive introduction to Impressionism!

This virtual classroom is an interactive introduction to Impressionism. Using artworks from the gallery’s collection, workshop facilitators will use drawing challenges and visual thinking strategies to allow students to respond at a personal and creative level to two Impressionist masterpieces. Students will compare and contrast a traditional art style to the Impressionist modern movement, challenging the notion of what ‘good art’ looks like. This virtual workshop can be provided for Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2 classes.

This virtual session is a perfect introduction to two famous, very different Impressionist artists – Claude Monet and Edgar Degas. In live group discussions, students can practise using appropriate artistic vocabulary. They will be encouraged to say what they see, feel and think about the paintings. A series of fast-paced drawing tasks for each painting offers fun opportunities to practise drawing playfully, with no pressure to ‘get it right’. Each drawing task has been selected to emphasise personal rather than perfect artistic attributes: excellent concentration skills, imagination, individuality and most important of all, rule-breaking!

The workshop is based on National Museums Liverpool’s belief that every child’s perspective is valued, and allows students to have their own unique creative response to modern masterpieces. Students speaking and listening, visual literacy and critical thinking skills are developed. The workshop recognises the power of their gallery’s internationally important collection to encourage mindfulness through thinking and working creatively. Their pre-workshop Impressionist glossary is a handy teaching aid and accompanies a Key Stage appropriate activity to prepare students for their live workshop.  Post-workshop activities use the featured artworks as a springboard for further educational opportunities, linking to other areas of the curriculum.
