Bring your curriculum to life and connect your students with nature at WWT wetland centres
Last updated 8 February 2023
The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust have run a learning programme for over 75 years. They welcome 40,000 learners each year across their ten wetland centres.
About WWT
WWT are a community of dedicated staff, volunteers and members, brought together by a love of wetlands and a drive to protect them.
They believe all you need to start making the world a better place is imagination, passion and a trusty pair of boots.
And where better to start than with our younger generations!
The WWT Centres provide unique opportunities for learners of all ages and abilities to get close to wetland wildlife from the UK and across the world.
As one of the UK’s leading providers of outdoor education, WWT know that people learn best through real-life experiences and hands-on activities.
Your Visit
Their focus is on helping you meet your curriculum requirements whilst connecting your students to nature to improve their wellbeing. The link between connecting with nature and mental wellbeing has long been recognised and wetland environments are shown to be particularly beneficial in this respect.
They include curriculum-linked learning sessions, pre and post-visit session plans and a range of interactive resources that can be used to enhance learning on the day.
Their educational visit packages cover key science, geography and PSHE topics from EYFS to university level.
As part of your visit, their expert staff can deliver a range of workshops focusing on animals, plants and the natural environment. Some are designed to support your work in science and geography, some focus on highlighting environmental issues, whilst others aim to enhance students’ wellbeing.
During the remainder of your school trip, you will have full access to the site and facilities. There are great opportunities to see a wide range of animals with exhibits where students can get up close, a range of talks and experiences and child-friendly hides where your students can view some real wildlife spectacles.
WWT also offer free familiarisation visits for teachers ahead of your school trip.
If your school caters for economically disadvantaged children (defined by the % of children eligible for free school meals), you may even qualify for a free visit as part of their Generation Wild programme. See www.generationwild.org.uk to find out more and check if your school qualifies.
For the last four years in a row, 100% of visiting teachers surveyed said they would recommend a visit to a WWT wetland centre.
All of the above is available at seven of their centres:
