About

Workshops at St. Mary’s combine hands-on, site-specific learning with strong links to the National Curriculum to provide an educational and engaging experience that brings history to life.

With the stone structure being in place from the start of the fourteenth century, St. Mary’s has been here for all of the key events in the history of the North East, including: The Great Fire of Gateshead, Civil Wars and witch trials. Since Tyne and Wear Building Preservation Trust have taken on St. Mary’s, their school workshops have been redesigned by a local History PhD graduate with years of experience in the heritage industry.

They have a range of topics available but are also open to a more bespoke package to suit your class’s needs.

Workshops are 90 minutes, a full day is 10am-2pm and includes an accessible historical tour of the Quayside. For groups of more than 30, a full day visit is recommended so that the group can be divided for students to have a more engaging experience.

T+WBPT can’t wait to share these stories with you and your students!
