Dudley Canal and Caverns’ Sedimentary Rocks and Fossils Workshop

About
The “Sedimentary Rocks and Fossils” workshop at Dudley Canal & Caverns offers students an engaging exploration into the geological history of the Black Country region.
This 45-minute, hands-on session is designed to complement the 45-minute underground boat trip, providing a comprehensive understanding of the area’s rich fossil record and sedimentary formations. Participants delve into the formation of sedimentary rocks and the fossilisation process, focusing on the Silurian limestone deposits found in the Midlands. These rocks, dating back approximately 428 million years, are renowned for their well-preserved fossils, including trilobites like the “Dudley Bug”. The workshop encourages active participation through hands-on examination of fossils and rocks, allowing attendees to identify various species and understand their significance. This tactile approach enhances comprehension of geological concepts and the historical context of the specimens.
This workshop aligns with the KS2 Science Programme of Study: Rocks
