Since 2006, Vamos Theatre has taken its funny and fearless brand of wordless theatre across the length and breadth of the UK and beyond. Their trademark style combines full mask with strong visual design and an original soundtrack.

The company tours its full-scale mask theatre productions throughout the UK annually. They share their work and skills with communities and have been working with schools and colleges since their formation.

Their workshops, videos and teaching resources cover mask performing, mask making, physical theatre and devising, and encourage teamwork and confidence, focus, participation and creativity.

Vamos Theatres’ Creative Producer realised that because of the pandemic young actors and early-career artists were not connected or confident in their bodies. Their bodies were stiff, wooden, and tense; their nerves and anxieties were translating into their physical character and storytelling. It was this observation that started a digital learning programme based on Vamos Theatre’s full mask, devised theatre techniques; mask.ED.

mask.ED is Vamos Theatre’s learning portal where you can get all the support you need for teaching mask, devising and physical theatre. Mask.ED gives teachers access to practical and inspiring film based teaching with comprehensive, easy-to-use notes and lesson support. Each module is presented in a series of building-block units with excellent connection to exam board requirements, suitable for KS3 & KS4.

The first in the series is available now; Module 1 Using Mask in Drama, suitable for KS3 with an emphasis on preparing students for GCSE Drama, and comprises 6 lesson units covering all the essential techniques of mask and non-verbal theatre. Module 2 will be available later this year. Watch a sample lesson here.

Each unit is presented through practical and interactive film, demonstrated by actors and using footage from professional performances. It is all supported by an extensive Teacher’s Notes pack, as well as a PowerPoint document to support classroom learning.

Each unit is full of learning points, techniques, language for learning and opportunities to practice skills directly related to the study of drama at GCSE level, such as the analysis and evaluation of both working process and final performance. This is done through discussion in the films and further supported with suggestions for theory practice in the Notes.

Vamos Theatre continue to deliver workshops in person across the length and breadth of the country. However, through digital learning, Vamos Theatre aim to reach even more young people across the UK and beyond, showing them the power of mask, the versatility of devising, and how non-verbal theatre skills can inform and improve all kinds of performance styles.

Most of all, Vamos Theatre hope that this initiative can help young students of drama feel confident in their physicality again. Vamos Theatre hope that mask.ED will get your young actors confident and creative in their bodies once again.
