The School Trip Community was created to share the unique educational value that arts & cultural venues can offer. They may currently be closed to the public, but that doesn’t mean we still can’t enjoy the wealth of free teaching resources and knowledge they can offer.

Bush Theatre

Bush Theatre has launched a series of Monday Monologues. The series brings new work from some of the most exciting UK and Irish writers, including Travis Alabanza, Natasha Brown, Shaun Dunne, Sophie Ellerby and Tristan Fynn-Aiduenu.

Written and recorded during the lockdown, the monologues will be released fortnightly and will be available to watch for the next 12 months. The films are free to watch on their YouTube channel.

Mousetrap Theatre Projects have launched #EveryHomeATheatre. The scheme encourages people to be creative and get involved in some theatre-based fun. Each week, they’ll be setting a new creative challenge on a different theme and exploring different genres, techniques and more. Each task will be simple and suitable for all ages and levels of experience – no previous skills required to have fun and get involved.

National Theatre

The National Theatre offers a wealth of free online productions, teaching resources, educational videos, insights and activities.

National Theatre At Home is a way of seeing some of the NT’s famous work from the comfort of our homes, each Thursday from 7pm. The series kicked off with their hit production of One Man, Two Guvnors. Continuing with Jane Eyre, Treasure Island, Twelfth Night, Frankenstein, Antony & Cleopatra, Barber Shop Chronicles, A Streetcar Named Desire, This House, Coriolanus, The Madness of George III and Small Island.

Currently showing is Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus. Lucian Msamati plays Salieri in Peter Shaffer’s iconic play, directed by Michael Longhurst with live orchestral accompaniment by Southbank Sinfonia.

In addition to the weekly performances, UK state-funded schools have access to the National Theatre Collection. The Collection brings the best of British Theatre to all state-funded schools for free. From Shakespeare and Greek tragedy to contemporary literary adaptations, the Collection supports the primary and secondary curriculum. Teachers can get access to high-quality recordings of 24 world-class productions, plus a range of tailored learning resources.

The Woman in Black

The Woman in Black’s free education pack offers an in-depth exploration of the play. The teaching resource includes insights into the production process, including interviews with its creators, Susan Hill and adaptor Stephen Mallatratt.

The accompanying Scene Director allows your students to direct their own scene from The Woman in Black. This interactive video resource experiments with direction, set, lighting, sound and costume. Imperial War Museum

Imperial War Museum (IWM) is a group of five museums – IWM London, Churchill War Rooms, HMS Belfast, IWM North and IWM Duxford.

Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum’s new ‘Try This At Home’ site includes fun activities for all ages. The site consists of a Dino Directory, arts & crafts, projects to do in your back garden and more.

Their accompanying resource library supports the teaching of Science and nature with topics from the dinosaurs, to habitats and evolution.

Students can also explore the Natural History Museum’s collection with their virtual tours. Take a deep dive into the life of a blue whale and even get a guided-tour from Sir David Attenborough. Students can also see behind-the-scenes of films shot in the museum, including Paddington and The Mummy.

Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh

Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh consists of four sites in Edinburgh, Benmore, Dawyck and Logan.
